Chevrolet's IndyCar aero kit - is it a looker?

On the 17th of February, Chevrolet unveiled its new aero kit for the 2015 IndyCar season, which will be used on short ovals and roat/street courses, with Honda to unveil its own a few weeks later. For those of you who don't what the aero kit is, it is basically a complete redesign of the Dallara DW12's bodywork and designed to boost the existing performance of the DW12, and as you can see below, it does change the look of the car, although maybe not in the most pleasing of ways...

The original DW12 is the one on the left, the new one being on the right. I guess one word to describe it would be...striking. The front wings are now a lot more complex and there is a lot more body work as well at the rear, as well as bigger sidepods. To answer the question of this blog post...it isn't really a looker. However, whilst it may not be the most pleasing thing to look at, it no doubt will add a new element to the series, with aerodynamics playing a bigger role in the series than they have done in recent history.  The 26th of February edition of Autosport Magazine (which is out until the 5th of March) has a brilliant double page spread on the aero kit (image below) which is certainly worth a read.

The first race of the IndyCar season is the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the 29th of March. St Petersburg is a street course so we will get to see both Honda's and Chevrolet's kits in action for the first time. Stay tuned for a future blog post, where I will compare Chevrolet and Honda's aerokits.
